Hardscaping

Hardscape is the part of a landscape you stand on, sit on and walk across. It is what turns a slope you avoid into a yard you use.

Steps that are the same height all the way up, a walkway that drains, a seat wall at the right height to actually sit on. The details are what separate built from installed.

    Walk the site

    We look at how you move through the yard now, where water goes, and what is fighting you.

    Set the grades

    Steps, landings and walks get laid out so risers are consistent and every surface sheds water.

  3. 03

    Build the base

    Compacted aggregate under everything, the same as a patio. Stone set on dirt moves.

  4. 04

    Set the stone

    Treads, caps and wall stone set level and pinned or adhered where they need to be.

  5. 05

    Finish and clean

    Joints filled, edges tidied, site swept and hauled off.

Hardscaping: common questions

What is the difference between hardscaping and landscaping?

Landscaping is the living part: plants, turf, mulch, soil. Hardscaping is the built part: stone, block, pavers, walls, steps. Most projects are both, and the hardscape usually has to happen first.

Do you build stone steps into a slope?

Yes, and it is some of the most useful work we do. A slope with steps and a landing is usable. The same slope without them is something you mow and nothing else.

How long does a hardscape project take?

A walkway can be two days. A patio with a seat wall and steps is usually one to two weeks. Weather and access drive it more than square footage.
