Outdoor Living

The difference between a patio and an outdoor room is usually a fire feature, a place to sit and enough light to stay out after dark.

These are the projects people use most and regret least. They are also the ones where getting the dimensions right matters, because a fire pit at the wrong size or a seat wall at the wrong height quietly never gets used.

How the work goes

  • Wood burning or gas fire features
  • Seat walls at a real sitting height
  • Outdoor kitchen framing and veneer
  • Low voltage lighting, aimed properly
  • Sized around the furniture you actually own
  1. 01

    Size it for people

Seating distance, wall height, clearance around the fire. Dimensions come from how people actually sit, not from the catalog photo.

  2. 02

    Build the base

Same standard as a patio. Compacted aggregate under everything.

  3. 03

    Set the structure

Fire pit, seat walls, columns or kitchen frame set level and adhered.

  4. 04

    Wire the lighting

Low voltage runs buried, fixtures aimed to light the surface and not your guests in the eyes.

Outdoor Living: common questions

What does a fire pit cost?

A built block fire pit on an existing patio usually runs $1,800 to $4,000. A gas feature, a larger natural stone build, or a fire pit plus surrounding patio and seat walls runs well past that.

Are in-ground fire pits safe?

They can be, but they drain badly and fill with debris. A raised pit with proper clearance and an ash floor is easier to use and easier to keep clean.

How far should a fire pit be from the house?

At least ten feet from any structure or overhang, further if there are low branches. We check local setbacks, and some HOAs have their own rules.
