Mulch & Pine Straw
Fresh mulch is the fastest visible improvement you can make to a property, and the one most often done badly.
Too deep and it holds water against the crown of the plant. Piled against a trunk and it rots the bark. We edge the bed first, pull what is growing in it, and lay the right depth.
How the work goes
- Beds edged before anything is spread
- Two to three inches, never volcano-mulched at the trunk
- Hardwood, black, brown or natural, your call
- Pine straw tucked at the edges so it stays put
- Delivery and install, or install of material you already have

Edge the beds
A clean cut edge between bed and turf, which is most of what makes a bed look finished.

Weed and prep
Pull what is growing, cut back what needs it, and clear the old debris.

Install
Two to three inches of mulch, pulled back off trunks and crowns. Pine straw laid and tucked so it does not blow out.

Clean up
Walks and drives blown, and the excess hauled off.

How much mulch do I need?
One cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at three inches deep. Most residential bed refreshes run 3 to 10 yards. We measure the beds and quote the installed number rather than making you do the math.
Mulch or pine straw?
Pine straw is cheaper, lighter, and better on slopes because it knits together and stays put. Hardwood mulch lasts longer, holds moisture better and looks more finished. Plenty of properties here use straw on the banks and mulch at the front beds.
How often should mulch be refreshed?
Once a year for most properties, usually spring. Pine straw is often twice, spring and fall, because it breaks down faster.
