Sod Installation

Sod is the one landscape improvement that finishes in a single day. It is also the one most often laid straight onto ground that was never prepared, which is why so much of it thins out inside a year.

The roll is the easy part. Killing what was there, grading the surface and getting the soil right is the work.

How the work goes

  • Existing turf removed, not covered over
  • Soil tilled and fine graded before anything is laid
  • Fescue, bermuda or zoysia depending on your sun
  • Laid tight and staggered, then rolled
  • A watering schedule you can actually follow

    Clear the old turf

    Strip or kill off what is there. Sod laid over living weeds grows weeds.

    Prep the soil

    Till, amend where it needs it, and fine grade so the finished surface sits right against walks and drives.

    Lay tight

    Rolls laid staggered and butted tight, cut clean at the edges, with no gaps to dry out.

  4. 04

    Roll and water

    Rolled for soil contact, then watered in hard. We leave you a watering schedule that matters more than anything else.

Sod Installation: common questions

What does sod cost installed?

Most installs run $1.20 to $2.50 per square foot including prep, depending on the grass type and how much has to come out first. Bermuda and zoysia cost more than fescue.

Which grass should I use?

Full sun goes to bermuda or zoysia, both of which love our summers and go dormant brown in winter. Shade and part sun go to tall fescue, which stays green year round here but struggles in August heat without water.

When is the best time to lay sod?

Fescue goes down in fall. Bermuda and zoysia go down late spring through summer when they are actively growing. Sod can be laid nearly any time here, but matching the season to the grass makes establishment far easier.
